Bumper year for church building grants

12th century Mount Bures Church is among the latest churches to benefit

Essex and East London church buildings will be £273,350 better off thanks to our fund raisers, members and supporters this year.

Our latest offers bring the total grants the Friends of Essex Churches Trust has been able to offer in 2017 to £167,350 for church preservation and maintenance and £106,000 for church improvements.

The Church of St John the Baptist in Mount Bures (pictured) is one of the latest beneficiaries. It dates back to the 12th century. There is no kitchen, toilet or running water at this church, but a project to install them is at an advanced stage. St John's was awarded a grant of £10,000 towards this project.

Welcoming the grant, Christine Morgan, Secretary to the Parochial Church Council of St John the Baptist, Mount Bures, said: “As the building is Grade I listed, the development must be done very sensitively, and we are pleased that our plans have been agreed by all concerned. This grant is a massive encouragement to the village – and especially to our fundraising! We hope that we are now only months away from going ahead.”

The Chairman of the Friends of Essex Churches Trust, Jeremy Beale, added:

“The Friends of Essex Churches Trust loves to award grants to help make ancient church buildings like St John’s more suitable for modern-day use.

“I am very proud of all our fund raisers, members and supporters for making it possible for our charity to award a grand total of £273,350 in 2017 to preserve, repair, maintain and improve Christian places of worship in Essex and East London.

“The Friends of Essex Churches Trust is a voluntary organisation and I would like to thank all our volunteers for their commitment and sheer hard work.”

Our next fund raising event will be on 17 March 2018 when the renowned Galliard Trio will be playing musical delights at All Saints Church in Rettendon.
