Dr Simon HefferSimon Heffer calls for church buildings to be nationalised

The first Annual Gepp Lecture has been given by author and journalist, Dr Simon Heffer.

The Gepp Lecture is named in honour of Major Tom Gepp, Chairman of the Friends of Essex Churches Trust 1989-95, who died in 2011.

Speaking at All Saints' Church in Writtle on 16 May 2013 Dr Heffer called for church buildings to be nationalised.

"These buildings are one of the great features not just of our landscape and of our life, but of our culture as a people and as a nation," he said. "Is any responsible government, in this day and age, really going to stand by and watch these great buildings fall into ruin?"

Simon Heffer's talk followed the Trust's AGM, and the event was generously sponsored by Gepp & Sons Solicitors, Chelmsford.
